The short answer
An effective brief explains identity, recipients and constraints before describing every decorative detail. Say what must make the team recognisable and which elements can’t be changed.
What to consider
Gather a few well-explained references: one for colour balance, one for the use of bands, one for the overall mood. Attaching lots of kits without explanation forces the designer to guess. Also avoid asking for an exact copy of someone else’s graphics: describe the features that interest you and use materials you have the necessary rights to.
How to prepare your project
In the notes, include main colours, mandatory marks, sponsors, names, numbers and areas to leave empty. Separate what’s essential from what’s a preference. End the brief with the context of use and the people authorised to give final approval, so any internal comments are gathered before confirmation.
Before continuing
- Constraints separate from preferences
- References with explanations
- One contact for the final feedback
Do I have to design the shirt myself?
No. You can describe the project and provide references: the precision of the instructions matters more than drawing skills.
